Spur Socket Wiring
Always use the correct type of cable that is rated appropriately.
Spur socket wiring. I am planning to add a double socket near the centre of my living room. A spur can alternatively be connected at the consumer unit which although might seem incorrect is actually no different to connecting to an existing socket outlet. And a single spur with double socket or fcu off one point in the ring is totally standard isn t it. Even the bs1363 spec puts the test current for double 13a sockets at maximum 20amp.
The existing socket has two cables connected and is original wiring and not spurred. This socket is intended for use by a new 2kw electric fire and a plasma tv. Remove the existing socket or switch from the wall if replacing. Also put your mind at rest and have a look at the current carrying spec for 2 5mm t e.
The iee wiring regulations are very specific about this. The spur socket only has a single cable with the connections to live neutral and earth. The spur must be connected to the existing circuit using the same cable as used in the main circuit. So my two questions for any electricians who might read this.
The first image is how the back of your double socket should look and the second is the wiring for a spur. You can see how to wire a spur to an existing socket from the images below. Remove any plaster debris and dust from the inside of the wall box. The terminal layout may vary from one socket or switch to another therefore carefully check the location of the terminal connections before wiring.
If the ring is in 2 5mm then the spur should also be in 2 5mm. This is exactly the same as connecting at the end of a radial circuit. 1 was he right that i had to change the wiring on this fused spur from branching junction boxes to completely radial. My plan is to take a spur from an existing double socket which is approx 2 metres away. If the existing double socket is itself on a spur off a ring circuit then convert that existing spur to a fused spur at its origin by means of an fcu with 13a fuse then continue that fused spur from the socket to a second fcu fused appropriately for the lighting circuit. In this video i show how i wire in a spur electrical socket.
