Why Are There 4 Wires In My Outlet

There are multiple wires because that is how wires are connected to gather to get from the distribution box to the farthest outlet on the circuit.

Why are there 4 wires in my outlet. The two bare copper ground wires help prevent accidental electric shock. Do the same with the white wires. Why do some of my kitchen outlets have 4 wires 2 black and 2 white and others have 2 wires.
