Top Of Outlet Works Bottom Does Not
It is in the kitchen.
Top of outlet works bottom does not. Sometimes called a lamp outlet this type of outlet is a little different from standard outlets in that half of it usually the bottom half is controlled by a switch on the wall. I borrowed a 3 led circuit tester. Hope that is more clear. One of the outlets is working with no problem at all both the top and bottom plug work.
On the one outlet the bottom works and top doesn t on the other affected outlet it s the opposite the top works and the bottom doesn t. We checked all of the breakers in the basement. A half hot or switched outlet is a duplex outlet that only has one plug permanently on while the other half is turned on and off by an ordinary wall switch. If everything looks normal then you can remove the old outlet and replace it with a new one.
Plug a lamp into the top half and flip on some switches and see if you can t get it to come back on. I have a problem with a duplex receptacle where the upper plug does not have power but the lower half does. Could the outlet itse. On the brass screws on the right side a black wire comes to the upper brass screw and a red wire comes to the lower brass screw.
The top plug does not work but the bottom one does. Many times people wire them so that the top halves are switched on the wall for a lamp but the bottom is always hot like for a tv. The other three outlets in the bedroom the top outlet works but there is no power going to the bottom outlet. I didn t think that an outlet could go bad on only half of it.
I ll try to replace it and hope that solves the issue. After turning off the power just take off the cover unscrew the outlet and gently pull it out of the box. Sorry for being unclear when i say that half my outlet doesn t work i mean that there is two spots to plug things in. According to a 3 light tester i just bought it shows that there is an open neutral.
I took the cover off and found this. I have a 3 pronged no gfi outlet that does not work. The bottom plug on all three 2 plug power outlets along the kitchen counter tops do not work. My house has a set of 3 outlets in the living room where the top halves are all controlled by a wall switch.
How a switched outlet works electrical question. The toaster was plugged in to the top the microwave into the bottom. All other outlets appear to be working. This has occurred on all 3 separate outlets.
If there are loose wires and you are familiar with how to wire an outlet the you can obviously just re connect the wires. What could be the cause of this should i be concerned. It s most likely not split since both top and bottom worked fine until today with no switches involved.
