Capping Off An Electrical Outlet
We are trying to remove an electrical outlet.
Capping off an electrical outlet. We re thinking about doing some sort of open shelving or wine rack in it s place so no longer need an outlet there. I recently removed a kitchen cabinet that was holding my microwave so there was an outlet behind the cabinet. See reference 1 the wires must be wire nutted in a box and then a blank cover installed if removing the outlet permanently to meet the requirements of the international residential code irc e3806 4 that deals with unused boxes. If you are in doubt then test the wire ends with an electrical multimeter to check for voltage before proceeding.
When you cap off an electrical outlet but you don t remove the wires you must cover the electrical box with a blank plate and the box must remain accessible. To disable or cap off an electrical outlet your first and most important step is to turn off the power before you get started. I don t know if it makes a difference but the capped off outlet is 2nd in line on the parallel circuit. Turning off the electricity and double checking the plug before you begin are essential to keep you safe.
This outlet is part of a 4 outlet 1 double pole light switch on a parallel circuit. Capped off electrical outlet. Then we twisted the wires and tapped them and did the same with the wires. When we turned the power back on the other outlets on the circuit they failed to work.
We turned the power off and disconnected the wires from the outlet. Then we covered up the hole.
