5 Amp Lighting Circuit Socket
Im looking to add six 5 amp lighting sockets in my living room for table lamps i have a spare way on my c u so i was planning on running a 1 5mm cable to each socket on a radial circuit.
5 amp lighting circuit socket. Discussion in electricians talk started by peter vm apr 14 2005. Radials for lighting rings for 13 amp power ie sockets etc only 2 or 5 amp type sockets only allowed on lighting circuits fused at 6 or10 amp max at supply fuse. There is the issue of the plugs not being fused if you have a 10a ocd so it might be wise to lower the rating of it if possible. The thinking behind this requirement is that if you were to wire your lighting sockets into the lighting circuit ie switched from normal light switch using standard 13amp sockets someone could come along and plug in a heater kettle or other high current using equipment causing your circuit breaker to trip or your fuse to blow as it would normally be rated at 5 or 6amps to protect the 1 5mm.
Thanks in advance heads4sheds 6 feb 2012 1. 1 5mm and 2 5mm is the cross sectional area of the individual live or neutral wires in the 1 5mm or 2 5mm cable. 5 amp sockets on lighting circuit. As for the undercupboard lights you could always use a 3 or 5 amp socket if you were unduly concerned.
Personally i have no problem with running a tv amp off the lighting circuit or 6 amp radial as it has been termed in an earlier post. This should be sufficient for most domestic socket and lighting circuits. I need more advice please i want to put two 5 amp sockets for table lamps in lounge controlled from a normal light switch on the wall. I recently moved into a new build house with a 5 amp round pin lighting circuit.
I want to have 1 switch on the wall to turn all the lights on off at the same time. Only dead fish go with the flow. What does 1 5mm or 2 5mm cable mean. A 1kw heater would run forever on a 6 amp circuit and a 2kw heater for some time.
These sockets usually wired back to each room ceiling rose usually 1 5 cable as a radial so the existing room switch will work the lights. If all other circuit factors are ok then it is a case of wiring the 5a lighting sockets as you would a lighting circuit but i would do the neutral joints at the switch. If however all heaters are fitted with 13 amp plugs and lighting sockets are fitted with 5 amp outlets then this small risk is eliminated. Most of us will have our standard or table lamps wired into a normal 13 amp plug with a 3 or 5 amp fuse to protect it and plugged into a standard 13 amp socket.
