240 4 Wire To 3 Wire
I d like to use a 220 volt 5000 watt electric heater to keep the brew room warm in cold weather but all the models that i ve looked at come with a 3 wire 240 volt plug end.
240 4 wire to 3 wire. Your cord is a feeder and must be 4 wire. I have a outlet that is 240v with 4 wires. This configuration is used most often for large lighting arrays. 240 volts 4 wire to 3 wire i have a 6 circuit sub panel that i built and use for this purpose with a 3 wire nema 10 50 matching range cord.
I looked up the configuration and determined that it s a 240v 15 amp set up. Connecting a 4 wire and a 3 wire circuit at a junction box is used to connect two 120 volt circuits to one 240 volt line. The two hot wires provided both phases which were 180 degrees out of phase from one another to handle the big electrical load of the range or the dryer and then the neutral wire which acted as a return path for any 120 volt loads incorporated into that 240 volt range or dryer such as the built in light or timer. I want to make a short extension cord about 6 ft to connect the 3 conductor plug from the ac to the 4 conductor 240v wall receptacle.
I am building a medium sized oven to cure powder coated parts. The air conditioner arrived today and has only 3 conductors on the power cord. I want to buy a 4 wire dryer plug cord and rewire the electric heater so it can plug into my existing 220 volt outlet and save the cost of having to add another 220 volt line. The fact that you don t wish to spend the money for a new cord does not change either the electric code nor the safety reasons for those code articles.
Before you wire a 240 volt plug look at its current rating which is marked clearly on it. With the volt meter i get 220v touching the two red wires and 110v when i touch the black to ground. 240 volt 4 wire versus 3 wire connections i think what bennie is talking about is 208v and 240v equipment like a water heater doesnt require a neutral conductor for proper operation and that the egc will have zero current and only act as an effective fault path. I want to change it to 3 wires i am assuming the black is also a hot wire.
If the plug is rated for 20 amps such as a nema l14 20 the recommended wire is 12 awg but if the plug is rated for 30 amps such as a nema l14 30 you must upgrade to 10 awg wire. I have an old electric oven that had a full size oven and a secondary smaller oven. In this box i have the neutral bar tied to the box ground. Using one 240 volt line to power multiple 120 volt circuits reduces the amount of wire needed and the number of.
